Home Education for teens
This is a tricky design, with a tough-to-please client.
My daughter is 14, come out of school and wants to study independently for her GCSEs. She is prepared to spend some of the compensation money she has to pay for IGCSEs, so money isn't too much of an issue.
At the beginning of the September term, when her cohorts were going back to school, I thought that the best course of action was to observe her learning and study styles and patterns. She is incredibly self motivated, and is an absolute bookworm.
OBSERVATION - Sep 2012
Throughout September (2012), she has spent a lot of time in the library, reading novels and reviewing them in her blog: http://what-should-i-read-next.blogspot.co.uk/
She has been approached by the editor of Chicklish and submitted her first review there: http://keris.typepad.com/chicklet/2012/09/review-the-glimpse-by-claire-merle.html, and the editor of Permaculture Magazine has asked if she would be interested in writing an article about Home Ed for her.
OBSERVATION - Oct 2012
Yemaya has continued to review books with impunity, and now has deals with Macmillan, Y Lolfa, X and X.
She understands the importance of thanking publishers quickly for their review copies, readinga nd reviewing them quickly, and letting the publishers know as soon as a review is up - often posting the review on theor facebook page. She also XX a couple of reviews during the week that she was away on holiday at half term.
The online geography class has started, every Monday from 8.30 - 10.30am. There is discussion, links to relvant topics and some interesting and in depth homework set each week. This month has been concentrated on volcanoes, with an aside to Hurricane Sandy, this week. I like how Home Ed can be completely responsive to sudden and cataclysmic world events.
OBSERVATION - Nov 2012
We are starting to look into signing up for the Certificate in Field Ecology with Aberystwyth University. The certificate is awarded after the accumulation of 120 credits, awarded in short courses over a two year period. The Certificate is the equivalent to the first year of University, and should stand her in good stead for the future. And the courses look very interesting!
Welsh classes start tomorrow (6th Nov), at our local primary school. They should be a breeze for Yemaya, I hope she can help me!
